How hard is it to come up with a song that captures the feel of a place like Vermont? Well, apparently not that hard if you are Vermont musician James Mee. Kelley and I traveled down to Pittsfield to meet up with Marion to shoot an interview with James, but also to hear what he had come up with for a Vermont Spotlight musical intro for our videos.
So, sitting in an empty barn on some mismatched chairs, James played and talked with us for a couple hours. He had one of his five guitars in his hand the entire time and it seemed a part of him. He talked about his love of Vermont’s natural rhythm; about how he loves returning to Vermont from trips and always being surprised by how green it is; about how a perfect day in Vermont involves sitting on his mower cutting the lawn and talking to his neighbors about the simple things in life.
As we talked, he was continuously stopping to play songs to supplement his stories. It seemed that there must be a million songs stored and recorded up in his head. Every time he would stop to pull one out of his noggin, he would first look up to the ceiling as if looking into the deep racks of LPs stored there, strum a few chords lightly, and then his eyes would return and instantly he was into the song he wanted to play. How cool would it be to crawl around up in there and hear all of them?
We talked about his travels across this big country. We talked about his children’s songs, which he wrote with his daughters over 20 years ago, which are just now becoming popular and entertaining a new generation of children. We talked about the best part of being a singer songwriter – playing and sharing his songs with the people of this nation. And talked about the not-so-best parts – dealing with the business side of the industry and agents and such.
Finally, he played for us the sounds that he had written for us, specifically for our Video Intro. They were perfect. As I watched and listened, my mind pictured Green Mountains, the hayed pastures, and running rivers. Here’s a sneak peak at James Mee playing around with some tunes for Vermont Spotlight.
